Gino Wickman (00:00):
Welcome to the Shed and Shine podcast. I am Gino Wickman. This is where Rob Dube and I help driven entrepreneurs shed their shit, free their True Selves, unlock true entrepreneurial freedom, and shine. We truly appreciate you taking the time to spend with us and we hope to make a huge impact on you.
Rob Dube (00:21):
Hello everyone. My name is Rob Dube and I am here with my good friend, Gino Wickman. Gino, good to see you.
Gino Wickman (00:28):
You as well, my friend.
Rob Dube (00:29):
Okay, so today we are going to talk about how having more inner peace allows you to make greater impact. I think as driven entrepreneurs and people, we are conditioned to think that hustle and relentless pursuit of success allows for greater impact. And I see this all the time. It's a law of diminishing returns as far as I'm concerned. I watch the people that I work with. These driven people go so hard. I literally see them deteriorating physically and mentally. And I'm talking all ages by the way. And it actually concerns me and I'm not joking when I say that for their overall well-being and I wonder what's happening in their non-work life. How are their families being impacted?
(01:17):
So reality is, and yes, I'm going to do a shameless 10 Disciplines plug here. When they have a strong foundation like the 10 Disciplines, they actually radiate. In fact, we were on a call with a group recently and you mentioned that to somebody. You said, "You are radiating today." And the thing is that person and others that are like this person are just so clear about everything. And this is where I see how that inner piece is resulting in them making greater impact. So Gino, I wanted to set that up for us and what's coming to mind for you?
Gino Wickman (01:56):
Two things right now, and I want to just kind of keep going round and round on this one. So the first one is the infinity model, the True Self model. And that the two sides of that model on the left side is impact, on the right side is peace. And it's this beautiful balance of both and the tie to the two. And what we're talking about here is how increasing your inner peace, how on earth could that possibly increase your impact? Because the default to most driven entrepreneurs in a painful state say, "If I heal this thing that has driven me all of my life, it's going to zap me of the drive and therefore I'll make less of an impact, less money, I'll go out of business." And it's just the opposite.
(02:48):
Now, with that, I want to hopefully give some benefits and some words to ponder and think about because what I've experienced and what I've observed in many entrepreneurs now that are healing and becoming more peaceful is you will become more creative, you will have more ideas, you'll have better discernment, meaning your intuition will be more awake and alive and you can just see things clearer.
(03:14):
You will make better decisions and people will notice. And so what you reminded me of is one of our mastermind clients who in their check-in with their good news shared how they were at an event. And this is an event that he's known people there, I think it was upwards of 10 years. So fellow entrepreneurs at this event. And so they've known each other that long, they've known him that long. And two people at that same event said the exact same thing to him. And they said, "There's something about you that's different. You seem lighter, you seem..." So to your point about people that just kind of glow, people are going to notice. And so he's just a different person now that he's shedding his shit. And then the other thing I want to share is just for me personally is I am a fanatic about my health.
(04:11):
I have two doctors. I do really deep dives on everything and they've worked really hard on helping me be as healthy as I can be. And going back five years in prior in all of my blood testing, my stress showed up very, very clearly. And now I have five-year records down the last five years as I've now shedded and become more peaceful, it's showing up in my blood testing that my central nervous system is just more calm. I am more peaceful. And so time just slows down. You see things clear, everything's a little bit better, but I'm just not amped up like I used to be. Now I'm not perfect. I'm not saying I'm perfect by any stretch, but I'm on the path and it's pretty amazing and it's so different than five years ago.
Rob Dube (05:01):
So I wanted to talk about what inner peace means and what impact means. So I made some bullets on each and then maybe build on them if you want to.
Gino Wickman (05:10):
Sure.
Rob Dube (05:12):
And these were just things I was coming up with from our work together and just things that were popping in my mind. So inner peace, trusting yourself, radiating positive vibrational energy, feeling connected to everything, unconditionally loving yourself and others, trusting your intuition. And ultimately, I mean the ultimate in it is your True Self is completely free. Now, what it doesn't mean as far as inner peace, it doesn't mean you have to stop working. It doesn't mean you have to stop producing. It doesn't mean you have to stop being creative. Gino already said you'll be more creative. And then I'm like Gino used to say all the time, "I thought I'd have to live in a cave." So that one came up for me. So I wrote that down. It doesn't mean you have to go live in a cave to have inner peace. So before I go to my impact points, do you want to say anything or should I keep going?
Gino Wickman (06:06):
I just have one thing per side. I've got no other words to add to your list because those words prompted two things and what I would suggest and one sweeping statement on the impact side, what it means is that you are making the difference you want to make in the world. That's all it means. I hope you keep raising that bar, but you don't have to. But whatever difference you want to make in the world, you're making that difference, i.e., impact. And on the peace side, the sweeping statement there is that you feel fulfilled, you just feel full, you feel loved. I mean it's just like you are whole and you are complete and you are lacking nothing. And so I know what it feels like to feel the opposite of that, and I'm starting to learn what it feels like to feel this way now. And so I would just suggest it's feeling fulfilled when you become peaceful.
Rob Dube (06:53):
Let me build on, let me take impact and do my list that I came up with that. So first I'm thinking as it relates to your business, whatever your widget is that you're selling, that you are doing your best work within the widget business and you're really focused on that, you're productive, you're providing value, you're doing and serving people. A big part of making impact as an entrepreneur, just think about your team members. Say you have 50 team members, 20 team members, 150 team members, it doesn't matter. You all know that you have such an opportunity there to provide them a different way to see life, a different way to live life just through you selling your widgets. Now what it's not, but it can be, so just pay close attention here, is you don't have to change the world. So if you feel like it needs to be grandiose, take the pressure off. Not everybody is a world-changing person. You don't need to cure diseases.
(07:59):
It's okay. You don't need to end world hunger. Of course, like I said, those things could be great and you certainly would be making a huge impact, but you can make impact in all kinds of ways in your life. Is anything coming to mind for you?
Gino Wickman (08:16):
Yes, a few things. And so the topic here is how having more peace allows you to make more impact. And so just a couple more specifics came to mind because it's almost like this episode is to motivate the listener to see the benefits and the value of what peace means in the way of impact where how can you not work on the peaceful stuff shedding your shit? And so the first thing when I use the example of the definition of peace is feeling fulfilled. I hope you out there can just imagine what that feels like to feel fulfilled and to feel fulfilled translates into you have nothing to prove in this world, you have nothing to prove. And with that level of peace, confidence, clarity, nothing to prove, everything you're going to be doing is coming from a calling where you will make a bigger impact.
(09:15):
Number two is when you are peaceful, you vibrate very high and you attract amazing people. When you attract amazing people, you're attracting people to you that want to be part of your cause and do most of the heavy lifting for you. And many of you out there are doing all the heavy lifting, if not most of it. And then the last thing, I love what you said, when we say impact, when we say that you are making the difference you want to make, it's not about world peace unless that's important to you. I am an anomaly. For some reason, I don't know the number I've impacted now, but I think it's millions and I have this number of 70 million people in my head. I want to impact 70 million people.
(10:05):
That is not normal. I'm not even sure that's healthy, but it's coming from the inside out. I know that. So don't feel that you have to do that because the point is if you just impact your family and your friends, if you just do that and your employees that is going to have a ripple effect, you are going to make such an impact on the world. So Rob, I love how you said it. Don't feel pressure to save the world and you get to decide how much impact you want to make. And if it's impacting one and only one person, that's enough.
Rob Dube (10:42):
Okay, so I have a, I think it's kind of a fun question because I don't think we have [inaudible 00:10:47].
Gino Wickman (10:47):
I'll be the judge of that.
Rob Dube (10:50):
But I was kind of curious if you were to spitball it, what percentage of entrepreneurs actually have inner peace? I just feel like you're around so many and you might be able to just say, "It seems like..."
Gino Wickman (11:04):
Yeah, no, that's good. So yeah, on the scale of fun on that fun question, that's a nine-and-a-half, Rob, just in case you were wondering if it was a fun question or not.
Rob Dube (11:12):
I don't usually come up with much that's fun. So I feel really good about that.
Gino Wickman (11:15):
Yeah, well, I would suggest, I have to think through the answer and talk it out, but most are not experiencing peace. Okay, so I think you already knew that answer. And I think it is why I am so passionate about the impact I want to make. And somebody told me back when I was like 30 years old, "You're here to help people out of ignorance and suffering." And I believe that to be true. And again, it's helping ignorant-driven entrepreneurs be informed. The definition of ignorance is just uninformed. It doesn't mean you're stupid or slow, it just means you're uninformed. And so my mission is to inform them that there's a better way and suffering means pulling them out of the suffering where they're mired in their businesses in hell. And so how many entrepreneurs do I see suffering? Most of them. So percentage wise, all the ones I've worked with? 90%.
(12:04):
And so I can feel it. I mean I can literally feel it in my body, their pain. And so I am on a mission and with this work now in the last four years that we've been doing, it has been a blast because they're noticing it in me and they're asking, and we're starting to have great conversations sitting in a coffee shop, talking about these things and I'm watching them heal, but there's a long way to go. Whenever I do this talk to a generic audience of driven entrepreneurs that don't know the talk, it freaks out a good half. It just doesn't resonate. And so it's heartbreaking and I'm over that now in terms of I don't let that affect me, but man, I am on a mission to show them what peace looks like and the profound impact and how it will make them better. So all it does is motivate me, it strengthens my resolve. So the short answer to your question is I would guess it's about 90%.
Rob Dube (13:02):
Okay, so one thing I've heard you talk about a little bit, and I wanted to bring up is are there stages of inner peace? For an example, there's an entrepreneur has to bust his ass in the early stage of her business. After three to five years she starts to make some money, places focus on income generation, and then at some point, hopefully sooner than later, she feels comfortable enough financially that she begins to work on shedding layers to get to a place of inner peace and making a greater impact. Or does inner peace come along at any point in the journey or can it?
Gino Wickman (13:42):
That's really tricky to answer, but what it prompts for me, and let's go back and forth a little bit on this because when I say 90%, what's important to understand is it's not like all 90% are downtrodden, depressed, traumatized, can't function. So I'm not talking about that. What I'm talking about is they're just not fully free and there's very noticeable things going on with them that they have blocks, they have trauma, the way that they're acting and being, there's so much insecurity. They built this beautiful facade where most can't see it, but I just see right through it because I had the same facade. It's like I know one when I see one, so it's varying degrees on the 90%. So again, it's not like they're all a disaster. Some of them are a disaster, just for the record.
Rob Dube (14:28):
I know.
Gino Wickman (14:28):
But with that said, I want to start there because the point here is varying degrees. So with varying degrees, let's go to your point about when do they have their awakening. And I truly do describe it as awakening, which sounds really heavy because that's what I describe what happened for me. It's just when your soul gets pinged. And so it could be a pinprick, but it's just this moment where you realize there's something going on inside of you. Your central nervous system is often amped. The tectonic plates are shifting, something unhealthy is going on inside of your body and you're just kind of called to look inside. So you can call that whatever you want.
(15:09):
What we hope is that every entrepreneur at 18 years old goes here and finds peace before they start their climb, but that's not the case. So where they get pinged, who knows? It's different for everybody. I got my first mini ping at 30, but the awakening wasn't until 52, so we hope to ping people sooner. So I can't tell you when that is. But then also I go back to the varying degrees. Some of you, you're fully functioning and it's not terrible, so you're pretty good and so you might ignore it your entire life. But my hope for you is even when it's minor and who knows how to measure major and minor, I don't want to get into measuring or a contest, but even the ones that it's minor, whatever that definition means, there's a huge opportunity there to again feel fully fulfilled.
Rob Dube (16:00):
My take on this is the sooner you have inner peace, so wherever you are on your entrepreneurial journey, whether you're mature, just getting started, or somewhere in the middle, I believe the success you desire will be multiplied. And I put success in quotes because part of what that means to you is going to... Or what success means to you is going to be really important. You may find the success that you desired if you keep going without doing some self-discovery. It wasn't really what you wanted all along. And that might be part of the journey and that's okay. Point is when you find that inner peace, I truly believe you will multiply. My hope is that you figure this out sooner than later. So you don't wake up one day in your 50s or 60s and wonder what you did with the last 20 or 30 years of your life. So that's what comes to mind for me. And that's all I really got.
Gino Wickman (17:04):
If you could drop the mic, you should drop it right now.
Rob Dube (17:06):
Sure.
Gino Wickman (17:07):
I've got nothing else to add.
