We truly appreciate you taking the time to spend with us, and we hope to make a huge impact on you.
Rob
Everyone, I'm back. Rob Dube here, and I'm with my great friend, Gino Wickman. Gino, good to see you as always.
Gino
You as well, mister Dube.
Rob
As you know, if you've been listening, we're making our way through the 10 disciplines. We've covered disciplines now 1 through 6. So, again, if you haven't listened to those episodes, please, please go check them out. They're episodes number 21, 23, 25, and 27. In between each one of those is a riff from Gino, so please enjoy those as well. Today, we're going to discuss the outer and inner world benefits of discipline number 7, don't do $25 an hour work, and discipline number 8, prepare every night. So I'm gonna jump in with discipline number 7, don't do $25 an hour work.
And the bold statement is never do anything you could pay someone $25 an hour to do. So Gino, please start by creating some context for us.
Gino
Well, here's the biggest piece of context. Don't do $25 an hour work. It's it is not a suggestion. And and again, the the disclaimer is always
Rob
if you want
Gino
to make 6 figures or more, or if you are making 6 figures or more. So please, that's who we're talking to. Our audience figures or more. So please, that's who we're talking to. Our audience is typically driven entrepreneurs, so we are not knocking $25 an hour work. We need people making $25 an hours. We need people making $15 an hour and 35, but we're talking about the people that want to make 6 figures in this world or more.
And so it's a simple, simple formula. You can't make 6 figures doing $25 an hour work. So you gotta understand that basic premise. And then from there is the launching point to this wonderful opportunity because then all of a sudden, when you know your hourly rate, and let's hypothetically pretend your hourly rate is a $100 an hour, which is basically $200,000 a year in income, you can see that doing $25 an hour work makes no sense. And all of a sudden, here we go back to your work container. When it is full, it's time to delegate off some 25, 50, $75 an hour work to people, start to build a team to keep yourself in your $100 an hour work. And it's an easy ROI decision.
Because each time you do that, you just keep moving to another level of income, team starts to grow and another level of impact.
Rob
Yeah. And I love that you went back to know your 100%. You know, because these constantly are tying into each other, and it's so important. So the idea here isn't to expand upon your 100%, your perfect number of hours. The idea is to keep it the same and begin to delegate, and, that's gonna help you manage and maximize your energy for sure. And, you know, you mentioned another thing which, you know, was coming to mind for me as I was thinking about this one because I've talked to so many clients or people who are interested in the work we're doing, and they think this is all about just getting an EA. But you said build out your team.
So this is about don't do stuff below your pay grade.
Gino
Yeah. You better believe it.
And it's you know, so let's I'll give you 2 scenarios. Okay. So let's pretend you're a one person show and you know, you're making, let's say a $100 a year in your business that you started, you're a driven entrepreneur. Executive assistant, somebody to assist you paying them 25, $35 an hour, whatever the number is. But now let's shoot forward to your 100 person organization you're gonna have some day or you currently do right now. And let's pretend you're making $1,000,000 a year, and I can't do the math fast enough. So help me out if you can, but I believe that's $1,000 an hour.
I'm trying to do the fast math. No. I think it's $500 an hour. So $500 an hour, you're making $1,000,000 a year. Well, rule of thumb, you probably have some $200 an hour executives around you on your leadership team. And so it's it's just simple math. So as the organization grows, you are bringing on higher caliber people to take on higher caliber work to free you up to another level of impact.
Again, keeping you in your sweet spot, getting rid of the stuff that isn't. And so that's where a company grows. That's where you're building a team. And so again, you get to a point where you are delegating way beyond $25 hour work. And and that's the beauty and that's the opportunity.
Rob
So you started doing this very early on in your career. And I'm wondering what was the outer world impact that you noticed and that you continue to notice?
Gino
Yeah. Well, I'll start with how I learned it. You know, so it was actually, my dad's business partner who said to me when I was selling real estate and he was my real estate sales True, I was going through that program. You know, he said to me, don't ever cut your own lawn. It's so simple. And I had literally just bought my first house. I was in that house for a couple months.
I had cut my lawn a few times, hated every minute of it, loved the first two, then it started getting really old. But when he said that to me, that's he he didn't say don't do $25 an artwork, but he made that point that why would I go cut my lawn when I can go pay somebody to cut that lawn?
At the time, it was $20. So let's call it $25. And I could go sell another house, you know, and make a 1, 2, 3, $4,000 commission. It was like a light bulb moment. And from 23 on, I never looked back. And so I had my first assistant at age 23, and and she elevated me to spend all my time focusing, selling, building my business. And I just took off from there.
So, then you asked about energy, because I want to kind of put this in a catch all because that's how I learned it. I hope you all out there have that light bulb moment because it's so clear, so simple, simple math. And then again, like we said a minute ago, tying it to your work capacity, knowing you're a 100%, just get rid of anything in that capacity that's $25 an hour work and your income will go up, your impact will go up. But now you're asking about energy. It's a no brainer. Cutting my lawn zaps my energy. Doing handy stuff around the house zaps my energy.
Going to these business activities, doing administrative work zaps my energy. And so this is really about energy management. So let's take any dollar amount out of this conversation, and let's just call it low energy work. So don't do low energy work. So so delegate, remove from your life all low energy work. Now some people love cutting their lawn. I have friends that that's their meditation every week on Sunday riding or pushing that mower.
It's therapeutic for them. Amen. Hallelujah. Don't stop doing that. You're getting energy from that. But for me, it just absolutely zaps it. And so it's paying attention to everything you're doing and just being really honest about that drains my energy, that builds my energy, simple math.
And you're just gonna find that the high energy stuff, most of it is also high income, high impact kind of work as well.
Rob
Yeah. You know, thinking about the inner world benefit, I always think about, like, why would you do something below your pay grade? And, you know, the inner world benefit here is if you so choose, you get to go inside. You know, I always like to think driven entrepreneurs, a lot of the clients that we work with, there's a certain aspect of control, letting go. That might be you listening, which is can you let go? You know? We're afraid, fear to let go of certain tasks that you're doing for various reasons.
I don't need to get into all of them. So many visionaries have a hard time letting go. But what's the sacrifice that you're making? And that that's just something I'm throwing out there for the listener to ponder on or reflect on. And, you know, what are your thoughts about inner world opening up with this discipline?
Gino
So let's go back and forth on this a little bit because I wanna understand where you're going because when you talk about inner world, you know, so so if you're saying what are the inner world benefits of that doing $25 an hour work, my immediate default is always, obviously, what I already said, low energy work. So now low energy is out of your life.
Rob
Yeah.
Gino
Now all of a sudden you're doing high energy work. All of a sudden Dube high energy work fills you up more. In other words, you're enjoying what you're doing. You're making a bigger impact. And so, you know, that is fulfilling you. So let's let's set energy aside. Imagine True fulfillment of doing things that are impacting the world where you're seeing the impact you're making on the world.
I mean, how do you measure that? How do you do you put a price on that? And so it helped me. So reask your question or resay what you're saying because I you you're teaching me something in that question or what you're saying ties to one of those two things.
Rob
Yeah. It does. It does. And I think, you know, it's just bringing awareness. Like, when you're when your mind is clear, when you're not having to be bogged down in that type of work, and you have that a little bit of time and clear mind, you start to notice things in a different way. And one of the things I was just throwing out for the listener was to think about control because that is often the thing that I'm noticing when working with our clients that they have trouble with. They don't initially realize it, but it circles to that.
There's something deeper going on, And I'm bringing into this a little bit deeper of a conversation that maybe control is part of it.
Gino
Yeah. And I and I like the going back and forth or like I suggested, because, you know, like I said, I might be learning something here because the other place my mind goes when I hear you say that is, you know, we have to make an assumption that, you know, the student out there, the client, the reader, the person doing this, they know they're 100% and they know how to fill that work capacity ball.
And so that's full. So with that being full, you know, all that time is being spent working, so that's still going on. And so when you talk about creating space and all that's creating space, again, you're filling that space with more high impact, high energy work. But what comes to me when you say that that's profound and interesting is number 1, going to your point about control. Some people won't let go of the $25 an hour work thing because they feel like they're the only one that can do Dube. Yep. Or they don't feel they can teach someone or they don't want to spend the time doing it.
So all of a sudden there's a control piece. And then, the other thing that comes to mind is just that, like, when I think about me doing those kind of things, not only does it drain my energy, but it's I, I, it makes me less productive on all the other stuff I love to do because I went into True stuff I love to do like zapped. So it's like because because what typically what you're doing is getting that shitty thing off your plate first at the beginning of the day, and then you go to the fun stuff. And and so that's not a good formula. So again, I I I know I'm not hitting on exactly what you are, and I think this is good that we're going back and forth. And I think there's something in here from every dimension. But anyway, I bet I just wanted to share all that.
Rob
That's so great. That's so great. Now before we move on, did any last thoughts on $25 an hour work?
Gino
On this one, I think we've said it all.
Rob
Said it all. Okay. So I'm gonna move on to discipline number 8.
Prepare every night. The bold statement is before your head hits the pillow every night, document the next day's plan. Gino, context.
Gino
You bet. And you prompted something there, so I just was jotting that down. So the context, is really simple on this one. And that is if you want to sleep better, if you want to wake up with ideas, if you want to be more productive, simply take 10 minutes. I mean, it's literally 5 to 15 minutes before your work day ends. And before your head hits that pillow somewhere in there, sit down and lay out chronologically the next day's plan so that when you wake up, you hit the ground running. And the point here is we will have people that will say, well, that's not the way I like to work because I like to wake up and let the day come at me.
And I when I hear that, hopefully I'll say it a different way maybe today that it will be heard. But when you do that, you've lost all control of your day. You've you've, your day has taken over you as opposed to you controlling your day. And so if you wake up and look at your emails and let that come at you at whenever that happens, or you go into the office and just wait for things to come at you, you've lost all control. And so the opposite is to prepare, plan that day, work through it chronologically, and you will be much more productive and energized and creative and a better leader for your people.
Rob
Yeah. And that's managing and maximizing your energy. You're clear the next day. Your subconscious while you're sleeping is doing the work on problems, you hit the ground running as you said. Now I wanted to throw this one at you. So many people tell us that they don't want to do this one because they're worried they're going to have trouble falling asleep or waking up in the middle of the night thinking about business stuff. And I was really curious about your thought on that.
Gino
Yeah. Yeah. I I so that you know, that's just another one. It's not fair, you know, when I respond the way I'm about to respond, just like the previous point, because I it's like that does not compute. I I so all I can do is speak from experience. I sleep better. I do less of that when I don't prepare for the next day.
And I go to sleep coming out of the shit storm from the previous day, going to bed, thinking about the shit storm the next day, that's when I'm not sleeping because I have no plan. There's there's nothing laid out for me.
So it's just the opposite. It's I love the question because it's somebody that hasn't tried it. And that's why the action we ask for here is to please just do it tonight. Everybody listening out there, just do it tonight and try it and prove it to yourself that you'll sleep better.
Rob
Yeah. Oh, I like the way you said, like, all the shit that came at me throughout the day, and it's just swirling around out there. But by preparing at the end of the by preparing every night, you in a sense, think of it as you're letting it settle down, and then you're actually calmer. Your your nervous system has settled, and then that is why you end up sleeping better. You know?
Gino
I wish there I wish there a way we could have, like, dual universes, the same person in a year, 365 days, or, you know, let's call it 200 workdays for lack of better term or something along those lines. But dual universes in the, in the one scenario, they're just not preparing every night and dealing with the shit storms all year long. And then the other scenario is they're preparing every night, work nights, obviously. I wish there True a way I could show the difference because I got to believe that the the second scenario is twice as productive as the first scenario. But all it's just a feeling for me. There's no way for us to create dual universes.
Rob
Yeah.
Gino
Bottom line is it works.
Rob
Well, if any academics that might be listening out there, if you wanna do a study, we Gino just queued one up for you.
Gino
Yeah.
Rob
You know, outer world benefits, you're hearing a lot. You know, you're on your game every day. Super clear, creative, energized. It's going to help you be a better leader, grow your business. But what about the inner world benefits, Gino? What comes to mind for you on that one?
Gino
Yeah. So the first one, is just sleeping better. You know? So that has been really helpful for me, especially in the last 2 years. I have really focused on my sleep and getting more sleep. I realized looking back, I never really got enough sleep. The energy that I have now because I'm getting enough sleep and sleeping better, because, I don't know how much more sleep I'm getting, but I'm also sleeping better.
That inner world better benefit of energy is incredible. But then there's also this ripple effect from that where you think better and your brain functions Because I think when
Rob
we
Gino
walk around tired and exhausted, we tend to be more depressed. You know, we we tend to have a lower vibrational energy. So it's just the opposite.
You literally flip all of those things
Rob
Yeah.
Gino
When you're sleeping better and and and Dube being more at ease about your workday.
Rob
Yeah. You know, one thing that was coming to mind for me were dreams.
Gino
Mhmm.
Rob
Something that I've noticed. And, you know, dreams tell us a lot about what's going on inside of us. And when you sleep better, as a result, your dreams become more vivid. You tend to remember them more. And if you're interested in that, if that pings you in any way, you can do some inner world work with that. You know, you can wake up and, you know, start writing down what your dream was and reading them back to yourself. It's pretty cool what kind of messages you start to uncover and maybe things that you've been stuffing down.
It could be even a gateway to unblocking some stuff, some shit. So, I wanted to ask you this, Gino. You say there's this idea of seeing it every night.
Gino
Mhmm.
Rob
And I've I we we teach this in in the 10 disciplines True coaching, and I wanted you to just because I think it's so powerful. I just wanted you to speak to that and how that showed up in your life.
Gino
Yeah. For sure.
And this is just bonus content everyone out there. So this really isn't part of preparing every night, but there's definitely a correlation.
Rob
Yeah.
Gino
They're just separate in terms of timing. So again, somewhere before your work day ends and your head hits the pillow, you're gonna prepare for the next day. For me, this is always when my head hits the pillow. And so I've been doing this for decades. And, you know, in building EOS worldwide, every night my head hit the pillow, I saw vividly the vision for what I wanted to create with EOS Worldwide. I literally saw it every night. And so there's incredible power.
I mean, this when you put your mind to this, whatever universal powers you wanna talk about are at work, you will get there faster. It will become a reality. And since we're talking bonus material, the second thing I would urge you to do if you're willing to see it every night is also practice gratitude. Just before you conk out, express some gratitude for something in your life, you cannot measure the profound benefits of gratitude.
Rob
Yeah. So true. So true.
Anything else coming to mind for you on this discipline?
Gino
Yeah. The only thing is one left because I think we covered most of it and it's and it's I never do this or did this, but we've now had a handful of our clients share this discipline that they do. But once they're done preparing every night, once they finish their preparation and it's all laid out, they then close their eyes and go through a mental exercise and they literally walk through the next day in its perfect form. They literally go through that day that they just laid it out, their meetings, their appointments, their whatever, everything mentally, they're seeing the perfect picture, you know? So it's just like, you know, Michael Jordan or any basketball player that sits, you know, on the bench and and envisions making every single free throw. And so somehow scientifically, they make more free throws. Same thing.
So I've never done it. But, but we've had some clients share it, and they say they say it's very profound for them.
Rob
Yes. Yes. Alright, Gino.
We're out of time. As always, thanks so much. It was great to see you, and I'll see you next time.
