GINO & ROB - THE TRUE SELF ASSESSMENT
===
[00:00:00] Gino Wickman: Welcome to the Shed and Shine Podcast. I am Gino Wickman. This is where Rob Dube and I help driven entrepreneurs shed their shit, free their True Selves, unlock true entrepreneurial freedom and shine. We truly appreciate you taking the time to spend with us, and we hope to make a huge impact on you.
[00:00:22] Rob Dube: Hello and welcome everyone. My name is Rob Dube and I am here with my good friend, Gino Wickman. Gino, good to see you today.
[00:00:31] Gino Wickman: You as well, Rob. How are you?
[00:00:32] Rob Dube: I'm doing great. Thank you. Today, we're going to be discussing, Gino, the True Self Assessment.
[00:00:39] Gino Wickman: Yes.
[00:00:40] Rob Dube: And I'd like to start by reminding all of you that this work is to help you free your True Self and shine.
So with that in mind, I'm going to read our definition of the True Self so you have a clear understanding of where you're headed. So here it is, your True Self is the real you, the most authentic version of who you are. It's unshaped by societal expectations, professional roles, or social masks.
It's the core identity that remains constant beneath the various hats you wear in different areas of your life. It is typically buried behind your ego, personality, and the suit of armor that you have developed over your lifetime due to pain, trauma, and conditioning. Being your True Self allows you to be authentic, free spirited, liberated, unconstrained, unbounded, and unapologetic. It allows you to realize and fulfill your potential, live in alignment with your values, passions, beliefs, and desires, rather than conforming to societal norms or external expectations and bring the best version of yourself to everything in your life.
Your True Self wants to be free. It can be free. When you are free and fully your True Self, you will experience peace, bliss, and love. The opportunity is to remove everything preventing you from being your True Self. Then you will be more creative, intuitive, impactful, and in flow, and you will shine as bright as possible.
Okay, so that is the definition that Gino and I came up with for your True Self. And what I want to do now is jump into what's become our very popular True Self Assessment. And this really helps you understand where you are on your journey. So a quick overview, it's simply 20 questions. You rank yourself on a scale from 1 is not true, 5 is 100 percent true. And I always want to encourage you, please be completely honest when you answer these questions.
These are for you to grow. They're not for anybody else. So the first 10 questions focus on your foundation, the framework, the 10 Disciplines. And these are important because when they're scored high, you have that space in your mind, a calmness in your mind. You have that greatest asset in your life, that time back to place greater focus on the next 10 questions, which focus on freeing your True Self.
Now we've had about 1300 people take the assessment, which is really cool, because we are now able to compile some data. I'm going to share a little bit about that data with you as we go through here, but some examples of the first 10 questions which relate to the 10 disciplines. The first one, which is related to discipline number one, 10-Year Thinking, in all my decisions, thoughts, and actions, I have at least a 10-year time frame in mind. 78 percent of the people are not thinking in 10-year time frames.
Gino, does that surprise you?
[00:03:52] Gino Wickman: Well, the short answer is no. And, as I answer that, I want to quickly zoom out and just share a contextual point and comment and then respond to that. So the contextual point is this, whenever I'm teaching the True Self Assessment or urging someone to take it, what I always say is that the True Self Assessment is going to show you out there how free your True Self really is.
And so that definition that you read, that is what 100 percent looks like. When you fill out this assessment, you're going to get a score and it's going to show you on a scale of 0 to 100 percent where you are toward getting to that 100%. So with that said, I also want to make you aware that if you have a copy of Shine, you will find this assessment on pages 22 and 23, as well as 216 and 217. It's also available on our website, the10disciplines.com, if you want to look at it while Rob and I are having this conversation and sharing this information with you. And so very quickly with that said, that does not surprise me that 78 percent don't think that way. Most of the world thinks short-term and what we're trying to help the world do is look out at a much longer timeframe to get time to slow down, make better decisions, see things clearer and ironically get there faster.
[00:05:15] Rob Dube: Yeah. And then one other question I wanna bring up is the fifth question, which relates to discipline number five, Know Your 100%, which is I know the perfect number of hours per day and weeks per year during which I want to deliver my value to the world. 77% of the people do not know their 100%. What's your passionate plea for the listener who doesn't know their 100%?
Let's get them.
[00:05:39] Gino Wickman: Yeah, and that number doesn't surprise me either, pretty incredible that 77%, but this idea is also pretty specific and unique because what we're trying to get the world to do is really look at their life and say, how many weeks per year are you going to work? And within those weeks, how many hours a week, because you have a secret formula and we're all different, but one hour more burns you out, one hour less, you start to get bored.
And so we're helping you dial in the perfect maximum energy output so you make a bigger impact on the world. And so by implementing this in your life, it will have a huge impact on the people in your life as well as you.
[00:06:18] Rob Dube: Yeah. So if I move on, if I go down a little bit more on the questions, number 15 is I am aware of and connected to my True Self. I wanted to bring that one up because we just gave our definition. And I'm curious, maybe a quick answer from you. Can a person stay aware of this every moment of every day? How can they get to five?
[00:06:41] Gino Wickman: Yeah, and I'm curious, do you have the percentage on that one?
[00:06:44] Rob Dube: I don't have the percentage on the next couple unfortunately, we're working on that though. We'll bring that to the next podcast or one in the very near future, I should say.
[00:06:53] Gino Wickman: Yeah, I'd love to hear the percentage on that one. So, please re ask your question again.
[00:06:58] Rob Dube: First, the question is, I am aware of and connected to my True Self, and I got to thinking, how can a person stay aware of this every moment of every day?
[00:07:11] Rob Dube: I'm connected to my True Self right now.
[00:07:13] Gino Wickman: Yeah, and the reason I was so intrigued by the percentage is, I wonder if more people say they're connected, but the reason I say that is because I have a funny feeling people think that they're more in tune to their True Self than they really are.
I don't know. That's theory. It's not fair to say, but it's so powerful when you are, because what will happen is you will shift from more of an outside-in approach to the world to an inside-out. And so when you're in tune to your True Self, your True Self, i. e. your intuition, your soul, your instinct, whatever word you want to use, is guiding and directing you.
And so it will literally tell you through sensations in your body when, whoa, this is a really bad decision, or fear-based, or when there's that calm and that knowing it's saying to you this is the right decision and this is love-based.
[00:08:11] Rob Dube: Yeah, yeah, so good and then number 19, which I don't have numbers on yet, I feel a sense of peace, joy, fulfillment, and bliss in my life. People have asked me are you talking like a hundred percent of the time and, you know, life has ebbs and flows. In a single day I can feel bliss in the morning and two hours later I don't, I feel like I'm suffering and then later on I feel bliss again.
So I'm curious, how can we direct somebody on that thought process for that one?
[00:08:41] Gino Wickman: Yeah, great. I think that that is a great place to then come back to the big picture context of the True Self assessment because our goal in this episode is to hopefully motivate you to take the assessment and treat this as a tool in your life.
So, you know, feeling bliss every moment of your life happens to a very, very, very small percentage of the world. So remember there's a scale here and you're scoring yourself from 1-5 on the scale so the idea is just to be really honest with yourself and if it's not 100% of the time, and it's only 50% of the time, score yourself as 3. But that's the beauty of the assessment. The idea is to come back to it at intervals to see how you're progressing and to create awareness around specific things. And there might be a time that you score yourself high because you've had a good run of bliss the last couple of months.
And then you might score yourself low because you've had a run of kind of fear-based thinking, God knows what, but maybe your life got shaken up a little bit and you lost some of that bliss. Point is, again, zooming out, what we urge, and I'd love to hear your opinion, Rob, and what you've been sharing with our clients lately, but what we've always said is at a minimum, come back to this assessment quarterly.
Just go ahead and score yourself quarterly, keep track of your scores to hopefully see those scores consistently climbing, but doing it monthly, even weekly can be powerful. So in preparation for this podcast, I just filled it out myself. I'm at a 93 today, but the reason I shared that is I wrote down three things.
So just my point is three things came to me going through it, and I know this assessment pretty darn well. And so by going back to it in intervals, measuring progress, celebrating success, but then having ahas, I believe you're gonna have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 great ahas every time you fill this out. And it just kind of directs the next week, the next month, the next quarter for you in terms of what to focus on, and I just love to hear what that prompts for you.
[00:10:48] Rob Dube: You've said exactly what I share with the clients. 90 days at a minimum. We actually have a True Self Mastermind that you and I run, and we bring this to that group every 90 days, and then we spend time shining light where light needs to be shined.
And so, exactly how you said it is exactly how I take it. Teach it to the clients and share with them. Of course, every 30 days is another great way to go about it. I do encourage you to take some time to decide which one, two, or three you want to put a focus on. Sometimes it takes time to kind of bring those scores up. So you have to know that about yourself best. It's interesting that you took this today because the last time I asked you, you had taken it in January and you were a 92. So I don't know if you remember that. So great, great job. You're moving on the upward swing.
[00:11:44] Gino Wickman: That's so great. And let me, you prompted another thought, cause I just want to stay on this again, in the hopes of really creating some clarity here. But to that exact point, I was a 92, I'm a 93. I can't remember what I was last time, quite frankly. But what I'm also realizing is, you know, at 93, you'd think, I'm doing pretty well.
But what's happening, the higher my number goes, I'm finding that I'm becoming more aware. I'm finding more resources. I'm having more ahas that just keep taking me deeper and deeper and closer and closer to freeing my True Self. So it just kind of like keeps getting better. And then I also think maybe the higher you score, the tougher score you're going to be on yourself.
Like the higher you score, the more potent, the better you are, the more there's a word I'm trying to think of, but it's not coming to me. And maybe it will. With that, you said something else I wanted to say, because in our Mastermind, we come back to it about every 90 days, like you said, and while our Mastermind sessions are rated very high, there is a certain energy when we bring this back every 90 days, and it leads to some of the greatest conversations, and what's great about the conversation is it's never any one of the 20 questions.
It's different for everybody. So that's the point we're trying to make is every time you come back to it, you're going to be in a different place. And the idea is just keep moving the needle, keep making progress, keep expanding and growing. Don't put a lot of pressure on yourself and you'll have wonderful new ahas every time you do it.
[00:13:23] Rob Dube: A couple of things I just want to add before we wrap, and that is, you know, first, it's not like a scoring system in school. So, if you're in the 90s, I've heard, I've seen people come to me and they say, oh, I'm in the 90s, so I'm good. And I say, no, no, no, no. Take a look at where you scored lower. This is an opportunity because we truly, we really do, we want you at 100.
The other thing is, as you read the book, and read it again and again, because we always encourage that you go back to it and maybe get more in tune with some of our content. Your score will actually change, because you're going to understand the questions a little bit differently, because there are some nuances and some subtleties.
So please keep reading. Get this information into your mind and then go back and you may go down a point or two. I found that to be the case with myself. At different times I've scored higher and then I notice I've fallen back as I get clearer and clearer and clearer about what we teach.
[00:14:24] Gino Wickman: And on that, if I can, because that's the point I was trying to make. It's almost like you're raising your own bar, you know? So the higher your score, you just raise the bar on yourself a little more. So it's really well said the way you said it though.
[00:14:37] Rob Dube: Cool. All right, so I'm going to wrap up this episode, Gino, unless you have any parting comments.
No? Okay, great. You said it all.
So I want to take a moment to remind you, the listener, that in addition to the Shed and Shine episodes that Gino and I record together, that every other episode we release a solo riff from Gino where he is sharing what's top of mind for him, all the content from the book, new learnings and personal experiences, and they are fantastic, Gino.
